Coating Thickness Measurement
By using a novel comination of mathematical modelling and non-contact transducers, we are able to determine the materials properties of thin (<100 micron) coatings on metallic substrates using relatively low frequency, broadband techniques. Conventionally, ultrasonic probing of the thickness of a coating requires using ultrasound of high frequency, so that the wavelength is smaller than the coating thickness. Our technique has several advantages:
- Probe coatings much thinner than the wavelength of ultrasound used.
- Can use a metallic substrate for non-contact coupling even if the coating is non-metallic.
- Some of the materials properties of the coating do not need to be known to make the measurement.
- Suitable for on-line application
